Easy Christmas Crafts: #12 Wooden Nativity Dolls

Nativity CoverThe Nativity Story is central to Christmas.  A great way for students to visualize the nativity story is through the Nativity Scene.  Today we are bringing you this paint-your-own Nativity Set with dolls that can be incorporated into students’ playtime!

I must admit that I was a little nervous taking on this craft as my painting skills are not great, but after looking online to buy a set of these, I was convinced that painting my own was the more affordable option!

Here’s what you will need:

Whats needed for Nativity Dolls (1)You will need to be prepared to spend a while at these- they are not to be rushed! But worth the effort! Here’s how -to:

  1. The first thing to do is to draw your designs onto the wooden figures using pencil.  Don’t worry if you don’t get it right first time – it can be rubbed out!Step 1 of Nativity Doll craft
  2. Once you’re happy with your design, it’s time to start painting!  I started on the hair and worked my way out from that, leaving the skin the natural wooden finish.Painting MaryI only gave their sleeves one coat of paint as I wanted them to stand out a bit from the rest of the clothes.Painting JosephJoseph’s headband was a bit fiddly, but just use your finest tipped brush and steady your hand – if I can do it – you can!Painting Baby JesusI just painted the blanket in a soft blue with a white trim – remember to paint the base of the Baby Jesus Doll as he will be lying down!
  3. Now you will just need to outline your designs using a fine black pen and add a little more detail if desired using the permanent colored markers:Detail pic of dollsAnd that’s it! Your set is ready to play and display!

Paint your own nativity dollsThe great thing about painting these dolls rather than adding felt or wool to decorate them is that they are more robust for little hands to play with!

All I need now is a stable…..might leave that one for next Christmas’ crafts!

We hope you have enjoyed our little series of Easy Christmas Crafts and that they will have given you some inspiration fro your own craft projects this Christmas!  Happy Christmas Everyone!!
